Rescuing the Fairytale: Redefining Princess Power

Are Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Belle merely princesses from frivolous Disney movies?

Or are they goddesses girls (and grown-up women) worship?

The fairytale was once, and still is, a powerful means of conveying social conventions and instructions for acceptable behavior. What messages do girls learn? How are they expected to behave? How are these messages carried over into adulthood?

In this presentation, we will provide historical information about fairytales and statistical evidence of the damaging effects these stories have on the achievement, self-esteem and body image of girls and women in the 21st century. We will deconstruct select fairytales showing how their messages have been implanted in both our psyche and soma.

We offer the revolutionary concept that fairy tales can be reclaimed and customized to affirm who we are and what we aspire for in our lives. We facilitate activities using diverse ideas and imagery to inspire a re-imagined tale expressed through the modalities of visual art, oral telling, acting, and dancing. The goal is to reclaim the power of the fairytale to serve, rather than dictate, how we should be. Through the workshop, participants affirm their bodies, identities and self-esteem. Most importantly, they get clarity on what it personally means for them to “live happily ever after!”
